Always Be Productive at the Office

In my previous post, I mentioned how too much work can help you in your career. But what about if you’ve got no work to do for a period of time? Would you just sit around and play Angry Birds in the office?
While having not much work to do may not be your fault, it is still no excuse to be lazy at the office and do nothing productive. Rather, you should take the initiative to ask your boss for a project to work on or training to improve yourself. If you know some problems the company currently has, then by all means work on a feasible solution and present it to the concerned parties.

Again, I am not advocating that you become workaholic and never take a rest. I believe that getting some time off is crucial in order to get your enthusiasm back. Sometimes though, you still don’t have work to do after your time off. This is where your initiative comes in.

You don’t have to restrict yourself into working on your own department. It could be about the policies of the company or starting a running club at the office. Keep thinking on what you can improve or what needs improvement in your company.

What’s In It For Me?

If you’re thinking that doing all these stuff is just more work for you, think about the advantages that you will gain first. First is visibility at the office. It helps to make yourself known to the whole company. Plus, the higher ups will surely be impressed to have a loyal and dedicated employee. This is great especially when the bosses are handing out your scorecards. *wink*

Secondly, you won’t get rusty. If you’re a sports enthusiast, you know that stopping your physical activities for a month or two makes you lose your stamina and energy. The same goes with work. If all you’ve done for the past few weeks was playing games, you’d surely have a hard time getting your mindset back to work. Also, you get to add more achievements to your resume, in effect adding also to your paper value.

Keep these in mind the moment you think about playing games in the office :)
